Should you use earplugs in concerts?
People tend to discriminate the use of earplugs simple because you don’t look cool wearing them on a concert. I did that. What we don’t realize is that this little plugs might be our best friends in live shows.
I did a bit of research and found out that high-frequency sounds will deteriorate your hearing forever. And that instinct won’t heal anymore. When it is gone or damaged it is forever. That is why 6-year-old children can hear more accurately than you do. Unless you’re a 5 year or younger baby reading this. That would be kind of creepy… But cool. These are all thing that you hear from everybody all the time, but you just don’t really care about it.

I started to investigate this subject because of my grandfather. He can hear barely anything, you have to talk with him in a narrow distance and with a high volume. his life wasn’t the most demanding one, and he had never worked in a noisy environment. So I asked myself what I could be like in 50 years from now. I don’t know about you, but the thought of not been able to hear music freaks me out. And I do frequent noisy environments regularly. And I also play drums. So my ears are, contrary to grandpa, suffering noises in high volume levels.
As I said before, I was against the fact of using earplugs in concerts because I wanted to enjoy the show fully. I thought that using plugs might kill some noises and sound effects, and some of them do! But then I searched on YouTube “the best 5 earplugs of 2017” and find out that you can find for 20$ some earplugs that will only decrease de decibels of the sound. They won’t kill any sound but just decrease the volume. Of course, I knew this was too good to be true, but I risked 20 dollars in the name of science and to find out if what the seller ensure was right 😉

The first time I used them was in the live performance of Korn (check out my story if this gig if you want 😉). I did a lot of AB testing there. I was constantly removing and wearing back on them. I did this with the openers (Hellyeah and Heaven Shall Burn) to have more references. And I was standing in different parts of the hall.

I can not do anything else that strongly recommend this product for your noisy days. My earplugs (and in all the most common ones) have different levels. The more you insert them into your ears the more sound you are going to block. I found that is I wear them in the level of the middle the song will not only decrease the volume. But I could appreciate the sounds in a more clean way.

That being said, not only the earplugs helped to keep my deaf days farther from today that possible, but they helped me to appreciate the live shows even more than I used to. I will also use them for my drum practices. If you haven’t tried them… Spend 20 bucks and give it a chance, I’m sure you will like them 😉
