Deaf Opinion of Rattle That Lock – David Gilmour

I don’t know why, but this one I heard it way after it’s release date. Maybe because I was hearing other stuff that was out there. But when the moment of listening to it had arrived I did the thing you (should) do with every Gilmour’s record: you prepare for it. I expected this album to be similar than the last album of Pink Floyd (The Endless River), with great solo’s and very, VERY well produced.

Rattle That Lock – David Gilmour

Song By Song:

1 – 5AM [3:05]: Good introduction. One thing happens in my body, especially in my head, when I hear the solos of David. And I’m going to describe what it is, maybe it happens to you also. Pay attention when Gilmour’s guitar starts, it is like a very charming needle penetrate in the center of your skull. Right?

2 – Rattle That Lock [4:56]: The rooster of the farms sings and you can start the day. Whit some blues? Why not? David’s voice is still alive! Oh yeah! I imagine a guy that has a lot of problems in that started day (problems representing the locks). But he handles in solving (rattling) them easily with his cool attitude. Returns home and he spends quality time with the family. Cool rhythm in the bass.

3 – Faces Of Stone [5:32]: There’s a guy, probably named Oliver, yes, let’s stick to that name. He has a serious drug problem. He usually drinks in the bar of the town. There’s a vagabond playing acoustic guitar in front of the bar. Oh, look! Is Gilmour! Oliver is living a tough life, and the song performed by the person living in the street reminds him all the pain his addictions caused. Losing his friends, his family, his job(s)… and so on. He has a chance to change, the light on his life is showing with the first solo. And with the second one, the light is shining like a huge diamond.

Song By Song (continued):

4 – A Boat Lies Waiting [4:35]: Unfortunately I feel this is a sad song and story. This is regarding a girl that turns blind from an accident. She locates herself with the sound of the animals of the farm.

5 – Dancing Right In Front Of Me [6:11]: You get her undress and the action starts. The act is performed slowly for the pleasure. The girl you met in the club the other day in the club moves like a professional dancer. The piano plays and it’s time for the cigarette. Nice picture no?

6 – In Any Tongue [6:47]: I have to say that the start of this song reminds me of “The Wall”. Maybe it was too greedy to put “Produced (only) by Roger Waters on that album? Turn the tempo higher and this song could be in it easily. This song is used for funerals of the militaries. “The sour tastes the same in any tongue”.

Song By Song (continued):

7 – Beauty [4:29]: A Hattori Hanzo is sharped, and then put in its case, the case is stored. We are somewhere in Japan and all seated with a guide, she told us to breathe and to think of nothing but what is inside us. And as the time moves on, we feel the music getting life in our body. It feels good.

8 – The Girl In The Yellow Dress [5:26]: Do you know Bleeding Gums Murphy? Lisa’s friend from The Simpsons? Well… He and all his family perform this song. Jazz music makes me bourbon thirsty, and very. Do you dance too with this song?

9 – Today [5:56]: Lullaby song? Until it strikes you! This one should be used for starting a party, forgetting all your issues and feel alive. David’s old (doesn’t mean bad) voice cleanse your body of all miseries. Then he kicks you with the solo, suits up and let’s go out. Don’t forget your tie dude!

10 – And Then… [4:30]: There is a boat, the captain wakes up after a terrible storm. Now the sun has already risen up and it’a beautiful day. And he knows it. I don’t look this as an ending career song. And then..? I think David is saying that new things are coming. The wood fire at the end of the tracks represents that something is still alive.

What I liked and what I didn’t

The Good: David’s solos. I really loved this record. The more I heard it, the better it turns out. Gilmour nailed it terms of the sound construction, adding a lot of effects that turn out to sound great. I really recommend you to hear this one with a good pair of headphones. It makes the difference. Polly did a nice job with the lyrics. David Gilmour solos….. Gilmour solos.

The Bad: As I said before, there are a lot of effects and experimenting of the recording process of the album. But I feel that something is missing. I would have liked more aggressive sounds. There are parts of the record where it can get so calm that you can feel annoyed in some way… maybe. But it can be that I’m just missing the 70’s Pink Floyd style, and that can’t be fair because this is not a Floyd album.
